Our Story

Seaweed Skincare

Living with chronic inflammation isn’t just a challenge—it shapes your daily life. As a family who has experienced its impact firsthand, we understand the gut-skin connection and how inflammation affects overall well-being.

In 2016, after a fierce northeasterly, we walked along the shore near our home and business in Grates Cove, Newfoundland. The coastline was covered in seaweed. Among it, we later identified Laminaria digitata, a species known for its viscous, gel-like properties. Terrence picked up a piece and asked, “What would this substance do if applied to the skin?” That simple question sparked our journey into the world of seaweed and marine bioactives.

Our investigation revealed the species’ remarkable health benefits. Within days of applying the seaweed gel, Terrence’s chronic and severe contact dermatitis improved, and his skin began to repair itself. We spent the next two years carefully extracting and studying its bioactive compounds to harness their full potential.

By 2020, we officially launched 7 Fathoms, introducing our first skincare products. Since then, we've expanded with leading scientific guidance from Dr. Robert Helleur (former Professor of Environmental and Analytical Chemistry at Memorial University of Newfoundland) and research-backed innovation.

Our Growth & Milestones

  • 2020: Incorporated 7 Fathoms and launched our first product line.
  • 2021: Partnered with Bounce Health Innovation for resources and networking.
  • 2023: Joined PEI BioAlliance’s Emergence bioscience incubator.
  • 2024: Joined National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program
  • 2024: Invited to participate in Emergence’s Team Mentorship Program.
  • 2025: Expanding with a new product line featuring Fucus vesiculosus!
